About AiCan
The Story Behind The AI Can project: Matt’s journey to more independence through AI tools.
My name is Matt. This project started with one small moment that changed how I work and live.
A colleague at work first showed me AI tools. At the time, I was a marketing and fundraising assistant. I was writing emails, making designs, and looking for new ideas. I enjoyed the job, but it could feel overwhelming
When I tried AI for the first time, everything felt easier. Writing emails and letters and designing content became smoother. AI helped me shape my ideas and say what I wanted to say. The words were still mine — just clearer and more confident. People started replying more, and my confidence grew.
Soon, I was using AI in my daily life too. I use it to write emails, turn letters into easy‑read and even edit my photos. Tasks that once felt hard became simpler. Bit by bit, AI helped me feel more independent.
That’s how the idea for the AI Can project began. If AI tools helped me become more independent, they could help other people too.
For me, AI isn’t just technology. It’s about confidence. It’s about finding tools that make daily tasks easier. My journey showed me what’s possible — and now I want others to feel that same sense of independence.
AI Can has been such a brilliant project to be part of. I’ve really enjoyed working on it, and I’ve learnt so much about AI along the way.
This project will help people understand AI in a better way. Lots of people think AI is scary or bad, but I want to show them that it can actually be something positive when you use it safely.
I’m proud that this project will make AI easier to understand and more accessible for everyone.”

What is AI Can?
One of the UK’s first digital hubs and peer-led training programme aimed at increasing the safe use of everyday AI tools by people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
AI Can helps people use everyday AI tools with confidence. It gives clear, step-by-step guidance for daily tasks like writing emails, planning routines and organising events. The aim is to make digital tools inclusive and easier for more people to use.
The AI Can digital hub aims to be the ‘go to’ place for people with a learning disability, autistic people, and their carers or support workers, who want to learn more about how everyday AI tools can help them – so if you have suggestions for new topics, please contact us at hello@proactivecommunity.org.uk.
The project has been researched, designed and developed through a partnership between the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing at the University of Surrey, Active Prospects and the Pro-Active Community and is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
